How DTF printing works
Direct-to-Film is a four-stage process, and each stage has a matching product or machine. No fabric pre-treatment is required, which is part of what makes DTF so flexible across garments and materials.
Design & RIP
Artwork is mirrored and separated into CMYK plus a white layer, then prepared through RIP or workflow software for accurate colour and ink control.
Workflow softwarePrint to film
Colour is printed onto PET transfer film, followed by a white underbase to create an opaque backing for vivid results on any garment colour.
DTF printersPowder & cure
TPU hot-melt adhesive powder is applied to the wet ink and cured, so it bonds cleanly to the print. A shaker unit automates this in one pass.
Powder shakersHeat press transfer
The film is pressed onto the garment at roughly 160–170°C for 10–15 seconds, then the carrier film is peeled — hot or cold depending on the film.

What is DTF printing?
Direct-to-Film prints a design onto PET film, applies a hot-melt adhesive powder, cures it, then heat-presses the transfer onto a garment. Unlike direct-to-garment, it needs no fabric pre-treatment and works across a wider range of materials.
What fabrics does DTF work on?
Cotton, polyester, linen, nylon and blended textiles — light or dark. The white underbase means colours stay vivid on any garment colour.
Do I need a white ink circulation system?
Yes. All DTF printers use white ink circulation and stirring to prevent sedimentation and printhead clogging. The AGP printers include automatic white ink circulation.
What temperature and time should I press at?
As a general guide, around 160–170°C for 10–15 seconds, then peel hot or cold depending on the film. Always confirm against your film and press.
What equipment do I need to start?
A DTF printer, a powder shaker/curing unit, a heat press, and consumables — inks, film and adhesive powder. We can spec a complete workflow and provide installation and training.
Can DTF print onto hard surfaces?
Standard DTF is for textiles, but UV DTF (the AGP UV-S30) produces decals that apply to rigid and flexible surfaces such as bottles, cases and glass.
